BD25.org将于年底关闭PT站,继而转向Usenet
本帖最后由 zhoubo518 于 2011-11-11 07:19 编辑It's been on my mind for several months and now I've come to the decision to take BD25.org from torrents to Usenet. I'm aware that this move will raise all kinds of questions, so I opened a topic about it on the forum.
Move to Usenet Q&A
When will this move to Usenet take place?
That will be by the end of this year. You will be informed by me about the exact date when the torrents won't be available anymore.
What is the reason to stop with torrents?
At the moment we have close to 5000 members, but their activity is very low. Most of our torrents die almost instantly. From the 600 torrents almost 50% are dead. Only 16% (94 torrents) can be considered healthy (3 or more seeders). These stats are terrible and show that there is no future for BD25.org with torrents.
What makes you think that things will get better when you change to Usenet?
There are no guarantees, but Usenet has some advantages over torrents:
1. Once something has been uploaded to Usenet, it will stay available for several years, depending on the Usenet service you use.
2. You can download with a very high download speed, because it doesn't depend on other users.
3. There is no ratio requirement.
Usenet sounds nice, but there has to be a downside, right?
You could call a downside from Usenet, that it isn't free. But the prices are very affordable. Depending on the download speed and file retention you can get access for 2.50 euros per month and you are even allowed to share this account with others. There are dozens of Usenet Service Providers with all kind of subscriptions. There will always be one that suits your needs.
I don't think that BD25.org is worth spending money on a Usenet Service Provider, so I rather see you continue the tracker. Is that still an option?
No, the tracker will stop by the end of the year. Be aware that Usenet access means that you get access to 5 TB of new uploads per day. Not just the BD25.org stuff, but also other movies, music, games, warez. The size of Usenet is huge. There are millions of users. Let's say your USP uses a file retention of 3 years. That means that 5.606.400 GB of files get offered. The small price to pay for this is really worth the money.
OK, you got me convinced. I will follow you to Usenet, but I don't know how Usenet works. Can you help me?
But of course I will. I want to keep my members, so I will provide you with everything you need to know to download from Usenet. It is not difficult. You can compare its difficulty with torrents.
Moving to Usenet could help the site, but is that all you will do to make BD25.org more succesfull?
No, that won't be all. A difference will be that the Usenet upload announcements will be part of the (new) forum. An advantage of that is that the forum will have more viewers, which will lead to a better community. Next to that I will introduce sub-forums that will invite our members to become more active.
What is Usenet?
Allow me to give a very simplified explanation. Imagine there are thousands of very big and fast servers that all are connected to each other, so the files that someone uploads to one server gets automatically uploaded to every Usenet server. Then there are Usenet groups. Think of them as hard disk folders. They have a name that represents the content. For example "alt.binaries.blu-ray". People can upload to and download from Usenet. Using Usenet looks more like using FTP than it looks like using torrents.
What do you need to download from Usenet?
1. Usenet client software. I recommend Newsleecher and I will provide you with it.
2. Usenet access through a Usenet Service Provider (USP).
3. WinRar and I will provide you with it.
Is Usenet a safe way to download from / upload to?
Your ISP cannot track what you're downloading, even Usenet Service Providers purposely do not track that, but it is possible that your ISP knows that you're using Usenet, which is completely legal. If your ISP uses traffic shaping (slows down your Usenet), you better use a Usenet service that offers SSL, because that will make it almost impossible for your ISP to use traffic shaping. Uploading is very safe. Usenet Service Providers hide your IP number, so it's impossible to track who is uploading what on Usenet.

2011-11-11 07:59 static/image/common/back.gif
