UG Bencoder replacement
New BencoderSome components of the site are barely noticeable when working properly, yet can be a real pain when they don't quite work. One of those was the library we used to encode and decode Bencoded data - in other words, what UG used to process your .torrent files on upload and reprocess them again when someone tried to download them.
As some of you may remember, the upload script crashed when you tried to upload a larger .torrent file. This was the fault of the Bencode library the upload script - and several others - were dependent on.
As of today, we are happy to announce this should no longer be an issue - we have replaced it with a new, more efficient Bencode handler and fixed all scripts that depended on it to work with the new library.
Much thanks is owed to wiki.theory.org contributors SynchronE, Punko and Proger XP for crafting that replacement.
Okay, but what does that mean for us?
•The new bencoder can handle much larger .torrent files.
•In fact, larger than the current upload size limit. We'll look into increasing that.
•This means you will now be able to upload large romsets and collections without having to split them up into multiple torrents.
•The upload and download scripts will take less time to process your uploads (or send you the .torrent file) and use far less resources on our side.
If after this update you still encounter any issues uploading and/or downloading .torrent files from our tracker, please let us know ASAP and provide us with a copy of the .torrent you have been trying to upload.
The live testing sequence will begin in Three... Two...One.
