Review: Titled univrs, it explores similar themes to Nicolai’s 2008 Alva Noto album, unitxt. According to Raster-Noton’s press release, ”whereas the focus of unitxt was on the processing of rhythmic patterns (‘unit’ = unit of measurement, element) and information (‘txt’ = data, language), with univrs the focus is on the conceptual differentiation of a universal language (‘universum/universal’ = unity, entirety)” .
Even more fun: on ‘uni acronym’, Anne-James Chaton makes a guest appearance, reading a “random narrative” of three-letter acronyms.
The album also contains a visual element, based on the “real-time manipulation of software-generated test images by audio signals” which Nicolai achieved by means of a custom built “unitxt box.” This routine features in Alva Noto’s live performances of the album, and can be seen on a DVD that comes with a special edition version of univrs, which will be available through Raster-Noton’s website.

Review: It's no secret to any self-respecting fan that "screamo" is a genre full of short-lived bands and record labels that, often times, are only noticed well after their collapse. No, I'm not talking your MTV-friendly, Hot Topic-based, MySpacecore crap that somehow managed to be called "screamo" like My Chemical Romance or The Used. I'm talking about those passionate and often times DIY bands who cram themselves in venues and basements far too small for their instruments or the sweaty, relentless boys and girls who want nothing more than to be a part of something simple, unique, and special. I'm talking about bands that create some of the most beautiful and intense emotional punk that has ever been written and sung (ok, maybe screamed) with a bittersweet sense of urgency, importance, and pure feeling. I'm talking about bands like France's own Daïtro.
Daïtro will always be one of the true note-worthy bands of the genre who's career spanned a rather monumental 12 years (2000-2012) before calling it quits to pursue other projects and interests, as most of these bands eventually do. Laisser Vivre Les Squelettes, despite being released over 7 years ago, is a record that never wears thin despite the thousands of times I've listened to it and modestly sang along to the French lyrics as Aurelien Verdant, their lead vocalist, screamed them with such force that makes them seem all that more urgent and important. Julien Paget (ex-Daïtro, 12XU, Baton Rouge), the bands lead guitarist and second vocalist, is responsible for composing the majority of the band's material and riffs and is truly an extremely talented musician and is complimented perfectly by Samuel Moncharmont as the band's second guitarist. The rhythm section consists of the extremely talented and versitile Benoit Desvignes on drums and Gwenael Grosclaude (2004-12) on bass who manage to perfectly round-out their sound.
Without a doubt, my favorite tracks on the album are the title track "Les Vivre Les Squelettes" and "Les Orbites En Éveil" but picking even those out of the 9-track album is to feel like I'm leaving the other's undeservingly unmentioned. There's simply no way to put on this record, for me, without playing it from start to finish and wanting to release every bit of tension, emotion, and energy into the world around me as the lyrics and perfectly structured riffs dance around my head. No words of mine could ever accurately describe the feeling I get inside when I hear these songs. Like so many other boys and girls around the world, they make my heart and soul come alive with each passing moment and feel as though I am just as much a part of this thing as the musicians who created these songs.
Over the course of their 12 year career they shared the stage with other bands who, as each member will tell you, deserve just as much credit and mention as the boys in Daïtro have earned. It's quite impressive when you mention acts like Sed Non Satiata, Ampere, Off Minor, Raein, La Quiete, Aussitôt Mort, and Sinaloa to just barely scratch the surface of those they've shared a stage, basement, or dimly-lit room with. These are the names of just a few of the modern "screamo" sound that has only gotten better since the early 90s when acts like Drive Like Jehu nearly perfected it.
Whether you respect the band for their sound or not, I must say I will forever respect them for the individuals they are. Several months ago, I contacted Julien about trying (very unsuccessfully I might add) to locate their fantastic split with Sed Non Satiata, which is my second favorite album of theirs. Julien responded that not only did he have an extra copy of the European pressing of it but that he would gladly mail it to me to complete that portion of their discography. I couldn't have been more excited except for Julien's willingness to have the entire band sign the record for me, including Aurelien who lives in León, France during what was supposed to be their last 2 shows. Unfortunately, Benoit injured his hand and the last 2 shows were cancelled and the band called it quits. Despite all of this, Julien went out of his way to not only get each member to sign it but also personalize their signatures with some of the coolest doodles of themselves and messages I've ever gotten from any band I've loved including the fantastic note from Julien himself saying, "Hey ****, thanks for being the most isolated Daïtro lover! Julien". That's what happens when not only the fans but band members respect and appreciate each other because, they know, without all the parts the pieces will never make a whole.
That's true DIY punk ethic. That's Daïtro.

Review: Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True is the third full length album by alternative metal band Fair to Midland. It is the band's major label debut after two self-released albums. Fables from a Mayfly was released on Tuesday, June 12, 2007 with its first single to receive radio play being "Dance of the Manatee". Through a fan driven grassroots campaign, the album has sold over 50,000 copies.
Fables from a Mayfly has received largely positive reviews, with IGN calling it "Easily a frontrunner for album of the year." The album reached #137 on the Billboard 200, and #2 on Top Heatseekers.
With multi-genre crossovers currently all the rage in the rock and alternative scenes, critics are left to fumble desperately about for labels. Fair to Midland make it tougher than most: neo-prog or prog-core anyone? In any event, after two self-released albums, the Texan cult heroes renowned for their explosive live shows signed to the Serjical Strike label, run by System of a Down's Serj Tankian, a band that Fair occasionally tries to emulate, and cemented the deal with 2006's The Drawn and Quartered EP. Demo versions of "Kyla Cries Cologne" and "A Seafarer's Knot" were featured on that disc but appear on the group's stunning full-length Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True in all their glory. Producer David Bottrill gives the band a well-deserved epic sound, reminiscent of the '70s with a big, clean style that highlights the group's virtuosity and their amazing dynamics. Those dynamics come instantly into play on the set's opening number and first single, "Dance of the Manatee," as the group shift from U2-ish swelling, chiming, guitar passages into thundering hard rock. Singer Darroh Suddereth follows suit, careening between alt rock to classic rock vocals, then down into the menacing growl of metalcore. And it's the band members' amazing ability to adroitly shift styles on a dime that impresses, but not as much as their talent to sound phenomenal in them all.
Check out the lovely Spanish guitars on "Vice/Versa," the piano arpeggios on "April Fools and Eggmen," the funky rhythm and swooping keyboards on "Walls of Jericho," the haunting atmosphere of "Say When," and the assaultive guitar attacks across the set for proof. That latter number pulls the band at times into C&W, "April Fools" juxtaposes a tinge of U.K. folk with modern metal, while "A Seafarer's Knot" arguably catches them at their proggy best. "The Wife, The Kids, And the White Picket Fence" displays the band at their most epic, as the group slide straight into rousing emo. Once upon a time the quintet may have been no more than fair to middling, but now they're successfully reaching for greatness.

Review: The Maccabees are my favourite band, and this album (their debut) kicked off the love affair for me, providing the perfect soundtrack to a 3000-mile road trip across Europe during the summer of its release. Here's a review from the BBC in 2007:
Brighton-based, yet Clapham-born The Maccabees have been gently gaining something of an obsessive audience over the last two years, with a succession of itchy cute singles, which more often or not have been accompanied by imaginative home-made videos. You want DIY? These boys have it in spades.
Led by the fantastically named Orlando Weeks, whose vulnerability and quaky tones match the subject matter perfectly – first fumbles of attraction? His vocal on ‘'First Love'’ is the equivalent of awkwardly sidling up to the person of your dreams while you fiddle with your cardigan buttons. Orlando, along with chums Felix, Hugo, Rob and Rupert (has any band’s Christian names ever sounded quite so indie?), have toured with Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T and Jack Penate and been mentioned on the infamous ‘'LDN Is A Victim'’, it was only when they released their second single ‘'Latchmere'’ (about their local swimming pool, no less) that record labels started doing all sorts to obtain their signatures, and really, after listening to this splendid debut, you can understand why.
Colour It In is something special indeed. While not as Earth-eating as the Arctic’s first album, it certainly deserves to find itself in any self-respecting record collection and 'Best Of 2007' lists come end of the year. Containing one of the best singles of this year so far is a bonus too, as ‘'About Your Dress'’ – the criminally unsold classic whose video re-imagined Fingerbobs style DIY action, albeit a slightly bluer version. Likewise current single ‘'Precious Time'’, which for some reason is being kept out of the Top 40 by dark forces.
While it ticks lots of boxes – indie, DIY, cute, colossal Myspace following etc – Colour It In also has the strength to carry itself through into the future and beyond. While it’s a piece of p*ss to shriek 2007, it takes a bit more effort to make something timeless – Colour It In has all the hallmarks of outliving any tiny-minded scene or stereotype. You could do a lot worse.

Review: This group's rather quick rise and fall is similar in cause and effect to that of Adorable:the 1990s UK music press machine building up new bands past the point of the artist's ability to deal with their own career.Mint 400 is more a case of "forgotten immediately upon release" than Adorable, however, and I've always thought this was a shame.
Mint 400 was formed in reaction against British techno and indie music, they released three good singles from 1992 to 1993, toured the US despite nobody outside of London having any idea of who they were, and quietly imploded.This story in itself isn't unusual, as the US is a great music market to break into, but chained with anonymity, a crusade against existing musical trends, and putting out singles and eventually an album on three different short-lived record labels (Vilebeat, Mad Minute, and Incoherent) which, like the band itself, were virtually unknown outside of London, this was almost certainly the pre-ordained outcome of this band.
Their sound is a punk-inspired psychedelic rock sound, and Natterjack Joe captures it the best of all of their releases, from punk-inspired bombast to a retiring psychedelic space ballad which sounds as if it could have been transmitted by lonely forgotten astronauts, a characterization which would be equally appropriate for the band itself.

Review (shortened): The title Ænima, according to guitarist Adam Jones, is a combination of the words 'anima' (Latin for 'soul' associated with the ideas of "life force" and a term often used by psychologist Carl Jung) and 'enema' the medical procedure. Besides being an interesting juxtaposition of words (as with the singer Maynard James Keenan juxtaposition of the words merkin and caduceus in the names of his wine businesses, Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards), it implies an ironic translation of Soul Cleansing, as an enema is an ** cleanser. This translation relates to the song meaning of the song "Third Eye" (listed below), as the third eye awakens the "life force" or anima. It is also related to the entire album as a whole as the lyrical symbolism and mathematical complexity of the music require increased awareness to understand, and are very progressive, a term associated with evolution.
The band dedicated the album to the late Bill Hicks (a comedian who the band felt was going in the same direction as them) and claimed this album to be partly inspired by him. The inside cover displays art featuring a painting of a medical patient with a third eye and Bill Hicks depicted as a doctor or "healer" with the line, "Another Dead Hero". Lines from Bill Hicks' standup set, "One Good Drug Story" are sampled before the song "Third Eye" and the title track "Ænema" makes lyrical references to Bill Hicks' set Arizona Bay, which is about the San Andreas fault collapsing.

It's almost entirely rhythm-driven and, clocking in over five minutes, cries out for dance-party play. It's a genuine dance song in garage rock fashion. Admittedly, no other songs on Give Me Fire! are as infectious as "Dance with Somebody," but there's plenty of first-rate material here -- "Blue Lining White Trenchcoat," "Gloria," and "Mean Streets" above all -- and it's all similarly rhythmic. Drums are indeed the driving force behind Give Me Fire!, an album that no doubt bears the stamp of its hip-hop producers, Salla Salazar of the Latin Kings, a pioneering Stockholm rap group, and his brother Masse Salazar. The Salazar brothers' rhythm-oriented production work on Give Me Fire! gives an exciting twist to Mando Diao's sound and results in the band's biggest hit single to date.
